Spirulina Elixir

How do you feel about super foods? Love them? Hate them? Think they are a rip-off? Let me know, I’d love to see what the consensus is.

Me personally, I have mixed feelings towards them.

For the most part, I believe a lot of quote-on-quote super foods are nothing more than gourmet groceries. Take Mesquite powder for example – it claims to be high in certain vitamins and minerals, but those amounts are only significant if you eat it by the spoonful, till you’re blue in the face (always read the labels!!). Trust me, you’re better off having a couple pieces of fruit, a green smoothie, or a large Kale salad. I hate to be the Debbie Downer here, but it probably ain’t going to cure you. However, all exaggerated claims aside, it is healthy for you and it does taste amazing – hence, why I call it a “gourmet grocery”… Or,  a food luxury. You don’t need it and you won’t die without it, but if you’ve got the extra cash, then it’s great to have on hand for recipe creation.

Moreover, I never been a fan of the “get-rich-quick” theory. I’m a skeptic by nature, so it’s hard to get me to believe most claims without significant proof – which is why, for the most part, I’m a walking science experiment. Health, hair, fitness – you name it, I test it.

So disclaimer aside, there are a few Super Foods that I do swear by – One of which, is Spirulina. Why I love spirulina is simple: It provides the body with an adequate does of b-12, which otherwise, is hard to find in most raw/vegan foods. Furthermore, it makes you feel good! Meaning that personally, I can feel a difference after I consume it. Which, is enough proof for me that it’s working!

Hey, to each is their own, but if it doesn’t make you feel good – then there isn’t much reason to continue using it… Right!?

I will say though, that loving spirulina is somewhat of an acquired taste. At first, it will most likely throw you off, but after a while, you’ll learn to appreciate it’s somewhat sweet and complex flavor. The key is to start out small (about .5-1 tsp) and slowly increase over time. Moreover, it’s most palatable when mixed with smoothies or fresh juices. However, when I travel, I just mix it with about a shot worth of water and throw it back (I never travel without it!).

Here’s a fav recipe of mine:

Spirulina Elixir

3 small (or 2 large) grapefruits
3 limes
1 T of spirulina
Stevia to taste

Juice grapefruit and limes. Stir in spirulina and stevia to taste.

Enjoy!

Yeah< i haven't quite acquired the taste for spirulina…still working on it :)

I agree with you somewhat on the "superfoods" thing, though. It always bothers me to hear that "bee pollen has more protein than beef!" Um, yeah, as far as grams per ounce, sure, but no one's going to eat 4-8 oz. of frickin bee pollen at a time!

Superfoods are actually really exciting to me…a lot of them have so much potential! Most are pretty controversial at this point, as well as ridiculously priced, but you’re so right- if you find one that make you feel noticeably better, that’s your proof! Everyone is different.

Where do you buy your Spirulina? I’m guessing you get it as a powder rather than a liquid?
Your blog is beautiful, keep up the awesome posts! =)

Thanks, Stacy! My spirulina comes from HealthForce Naturals or Ultimate Superfoods – I switch back and forth. And yes, I buy the powder :)
