Sunflower Seed Milk

by Callie England on February 27, 2011

Holy Moly – I made a youtube video! Geez, took me long enough, no?

Given that I could probably hold a conversation with a brick wall, it wasn’t as intimidating as some people make it out to be. However, I still look and sound like a huge dork, but, oh well… At least you’ll now know how to make sunflower seed milk. Guess I’ll just have to sacrifice a few cool points to help the world drink healthier…

Enjoy!

Thanks to you, I now see myself going on a “make my own nut/seed milk” kick!! I’ve never thought to try this myself, but it looks so easy and sunflower seeds really are cheap, so why not?!
Is that just normal water you use?
    (and I love your hair!!)

yay!! I love hearing that! Yup, just plain purified water. Make sure you use a sweetener of some sort – it really makes the milk. Oh, and if you want it a bit thicker just cut it down to 3 cups of water instead of 4. If you make it, you’ll have to let me know how it turns out :)

    Great video Callie!
When I wanted to make nuts milk for the first time I was looking for a video, because there you can see the exact process :) Perfect for newbies! :)

And you look very cool in the video, I tried to make one too, but it was a disaster :)

I need to hear more about Dairy, why is it so bad-I was looking forward to a rant because I’m trying to give it up. I used to drink a gallon of skim milk a week…that statement probably made you naseaus….but I keep hearing more and more that our bodies can’t digest it, so I’ve started drinking unsweetened Almond Milk (which I LOVE). I’ve been buying it at the healthfood store but I’d love to make my own. Is it the same process? I’m trying this sunflower seed milk too…how long do I need to soak the seeds? (I have a ninja mixer it’s no Vitamix but I’m broke. haha)

Ethically bad – Ummm, this makes me sad – always. Can you imagine the little baby cows being pulled from their mothers!? I bet they are crying the whole time :( Plus, drinking milk supports the dairy industry, which supports the production of Veal – Another horrible thing!!!

Then, health wise – I like this article. It’s a bit long, but does a great job talking about the acidic nature of milk and about the whole ‘calcium myth’.

I’ve got some almonds soaking right now, so tonight I’ll post a video on how to strain milk and/or make almond milk. If you’re using a ninja, you’ll want to strain the sunflower seed milk – Mom has the same blender, so I’m pretty familiar with the finished consistency.

Soak time: Almonds, brazil nuts, hazelnuts and walnuts – Overnight. Sunflower seeds and cashews – 4-5 hours. Although, I usually just soak them all over night.

I am so excited to find your website!  My daughter (22 months) is allergic to dairy, soy, peanuts and tree nuts, flax, sesame, etc etc…and so far the only milk she can have is rice milk but its seriously lacking in nutrients.  I’m going to try the sunflower seed milk…sunbutter gets us through lunch nearly everyday, so hopefully this will workout for us!  Thank you so much for posting this!  (I’ve been terrified to try hemp as she reacted recently to flax seed)
